How to Change a Brake Light

Car brake lights

While we sometimes forget they’re there, the lights on our vehicles are incredibly important for our safety on the streets of Omaha. Your headlights illuminate the road ahead, your turn signals alert other drivers of your intentions, and your brake lights let those behind you know it’s time to stop. When your brake lights burn out, it’s important to replace them right away. Luckily, you don’t have to be an automotive expert to learn how to replace a brake light. All you need to do is review our service tips below, and you’ll be ready to swap your brake light in your own Lincoln garage!

How to Replace a Brake Light on Your Own

If your bulb has gone out in one or more of your brake lights, you’ll want to learn how to change a brake light straightaway. Follow these simple steps to handle the job:

  • Find the Correct Bulbs: Before you get down to business, you need to have the right replacement bulbs. Review your owner’s manual to find the bulb size and voltage your vehicle requires.
  • Remove Tail Light Housing: When you have the correct bulb, remove the colored lens that covers the brake light bulbs. This can be done with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Next, remove the bad bulb.
  • Replace the Brake-Light Bulb: Before you screw in the new lightbulb, apply a bit of dielectric grease to the end. This step prevents the build-up of corrosion and rust. It will also make it much easier to remove the bulb in the future. Next, put the bulb in place and reattach the tail light housing. Now you’re all set for safe Columbus travels!

What’s the Importance of Checking Your Tail Lights?

As previously mentioned, all of the lights on your vehicle serve a critical function. Your tail lights especially are crucial for alerting the drivers behind you of what’s going on ahead. If your tail lights aren’t working, driving in traffic can quickly become a safety hazard. That’s why having a tail light out can actually lead to you getting pulled over and given a ticket! Functioning brake lights are a critical part of safe driving, so be sure to inspect your lights on a regular basis.
