How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

Row of tires

If you’ve recently dealt with a flat tire on the Omaha streets, you might be asking, “How long can I drive on a spare?” While you’ll want to replace your spare tire as soon as possible, different tires offer different mileage ratings. A full-size spare can be used for many miles, while a space-saver tire should be replaced within 70 miles. So, how long can you drive on a spare tire? Read our tips below to learn more!

How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire: Space-Saver Spare

If you’ve changed a flat tire while out and about in Lincoln, the type of tire you put on your vehicle will dictate how far you can drive. If the tire looks smaller than the rest, you have a space-save or “donut” spare. Many vehicles have these types of tires as a backup, and they’re usually found in the trunk. If you have a space-saver tire, keep the following in mind:

  • Spare tires shouldn’t be driven for more than 70 miles.
  • Spares cannot be driven over 50 miles per hour.
  • You’ll have less traction than with a full-size spare.

Be sure to check the sidewalls of your spare for any additional information on usage restrictions. Regardless, you’ll want to visit us promptly in order to get a suitable replacement tire.

How Long Can I Drive on a Spare Tire: Full-Size Spare

While less common than a donut tire, many trucks and SUVs come with a full-size spare. These tires can be used much longer than the rest, but you’ll still want to have this tire replaced in a timely manner. It’s unlikely that the spare is the same type as the rest, so you won’t want to put undue pressure on your drivetrain by driving through Columbus with mismatched tires.

What Is a Run-Flat Tire?

Run-flat tires hold pressure even after a puncture. These tires offer some pros and cons, namely:

  • Remains inflated for about 50 miles following a puncture
  • Tougher than a space-saver tire or full-size spare
  • Often costs more than a standard tire

If you have run-flat tires and your tire pressure monitor shows that your air is getting low, stop the vehicle, and inspect your tires. A visible puncture on a run-flat tire means you’ll need to make your way to our service center for a replacement!
