• LB7: Duramax engines first came out in 2001 with this VIN for Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks.
• LLY: These VINs are 6.6L Duramax, turbocharged, 32-valve engines from 2004 and 2005.
• LBZ: Duramax diesel engines that were made in 2006 and 2007.
• LMM: Duramax diesel engines made from 2007 to 2011, coupled with Allison transmissions for the first time.
• L5P: These Duramax diesel engines hit the production line in 2017.

What Oil Does Duramax Engines Need?

General Motors recommends SAE 15W-40 engine oil for all Duramax diesel engines. For NE drivers who have to consider sub-zero temperatures at times, GM recommended 5W-40 motor oil. Other oil weights can congeal at low temperatures. Then it can stick to the engine’s pistons and cause significant damage. During summer months in Fremont a fully-synthetic 15W-40 motor oil is a good fit.
